Advantages of a Computer Network

If a home has more than one computer, then installing a computer network is a smart decision. Networks allow you to share an Internet connection and files among multiple PCs. More importantly, they save time and money, and make using your computer equipment much more enjoyable for everyone in the family. This guide discusses networking for the home, but all information applies to networking for a small business as well.

Setting up a home network is the simplest way to get the most out of your computer equipment. And as your family grows or you add additional computers, expansion is no problem. Best of all, creating a network is easier than you might think.

The key benefits of networking a home include:

  • Sharing a high-speed Internet connection -- without anyone having to sign off, and without having another phone line installed

  • Playing games head-to-head on different computers from different rooms

  • Sharing an expensive resource like the color photo printer in Dad's office -- without having to interrupt Dad

  • Everyone in the family can share files from every PC in the house -- no need to put files onto floppy or Zip discs and swap them

To go wireless or wired? That is the question. A wireless setup uses radio waves, while wired networks communicate through data cables. Both systems have advantages.

Wireless Networks and What You'll Need

Wireless-B (802.11b) networks, sometimes called Wi-Fi, don't require cables and can be used in an office, home or even outdoors. They utilize radio waves and/or microwaves to maintain communication channels between computers. With no cables to run, installation and expansion is easy. Look for data transfer speeds up to 11 Mbps (megabytes per second). The 802.11b wireless standard is the most common standard in the US. You'll even find it available at public "hotspots" like college campuses, airports, hotels and coffeehouses.

A wireless network is convenient to set up in any home. You'll notice it also offers the flexibility of using a WIRED connection. Desktop #1 in the diagram is connected with a Category 5 (often abbreviated as Cat 5) cable to take advantage of the faster transfer rates cable allows. Using cable in this case makes sense since the router is often placed right next to the main computer.

Another wireless networking option rapidly becoming popular is Wireless-G (802.11g). Like 802.11b, 802.11g operates on a frequency of 2.4 GHz, but it transfers data up to an amazing 54 Mbps, almost five times faster than Wi-Fi. It's also backward compatible with 802.11b components at 11 Mbps, so it's easy to integrate. Wireless-G also features an indoor range of up to 150 feet.

What You'll Need for a Wireless Network
To establish your wireless network, you'll need two kinds of devices: a router and either a USB network adapter, or a PCI/PC card. All three are listed below.

Wired Networks and What You'll Need

The most common wired networking technology is Ethernet. The data transfer cables are known as Ethernet network cables, or Cat 5 cables. They connect the computer and other devices that make up your network.

Some people choose to set up a wired network, since it transmits data much faster than a wireless one. The Cat 5 cable used to connect your computers may need to run through walls and floors. But for the most part, you can conceal it under carpeting or behind bookcases.

Ethernet networks use proven technology and they're fast -- transferring data up to an incredibly fast 100 Mbps (remember, wireless transfer speeds range between 11 Mbps for 802.11b and 54 Mbps for 802.11g), but a cable must be run through walls, ceilings, or under carpets. A range of approximately 300 feet is possible using Cat 5 cable.
