What
is Flat-Screen TVs?
Flat-Screen TVs Offer a More Realistic Picture
These tube models range in size from 20 to 36 inches and have become
increasingly popular since they were introduced several years ago.
That's because they offer these significant advantages:
-
A
more natural picture that's focused from corner to corner
-
Straight
lines actually look straight so the picture looks more realistic
-
Less
reflection from room lights to minimize distracting glare
-
A
wider viewing angle so you can sit off to the side and still see
the entire screen
Flat-screen
TVs use three basic kinds of technology:
-
Tube models have a
conventional cathode ray tube (CRT) and are the least expensive
flat-screens.
-
Liquid Crystal Display (LCD)
models are the TV version of the screens found in today's notebook
PCs. These flat-panel TVs are lightweight and only several inches
deep, so they can easily be placed on nearly any desk or even hung
on a wall.
-
Plasma models combine
phosphor elements with neon and xenon gases in thousands of tiny
pixels inside a thin, sealed glass panel. Microprocessors send
electrical signals to the pixels that charge the gases and cause
phosphors to emit light. Like LCD TVs, plasma models are
ultra-thin and light enough to mount on walls. Most are designed
as monitors that are simply screens that must be connected to an
external TV tuner and an audio system.
Recommendations
You'll get
better picture quality on models that have a comb filter to help keep
colors from blurring.
DVDs,
in particular, look terrific on flat-screen TVs, so you should
consider a model that has S-video inputs and/or component video
inputs. That's because nearly all DVD players have S-video outputs
that offer improved picture quality and most also have component video
outputs that provide an excellent picture.
In
addition to being thin and lightweight, LCD and plasma TVs are
extremely energy-efficient, using only about a third of the power
required by an equivalent tube TV. They're also easier on your eyes
because they don't emit the electro-magnetic waves that come from the
CRTs used in tube TVs. And they produce a non-interlaced picture for
smoother images, especially from DVD players equipped with progressive
scan outputs.
